May 1945 is etched into the history of our Nation as the end of the Second World War in Europe, but in Timsbury it was the start of something wonderful.  A group of women had an idea to form a Women's Institute (WI) in Timsbury. The inaugural meeting was held in the YMCA Hut (where the Youth Club is now) and the Institute has continued unbroken for 67years.  Over the years, the number of members has fluctuated: at its height there were about 80 members.
As well as providing enjoyment and education for our members, the institute tries to provide for the village and its residents.  For many years, we produced a meal and entertainment for the Over 70's.  For some of these, they were provided with a 'goody' bag of items collected by the primary school for their Harvest Festival.  We have also planted a couple of trees in the village and purchased equipment for the Doctors' surgery.  When the village holds a large event, we are asked to provide refreshments and they seemed to be enjoyed by the villagers as well as giving us some much appreciated fund raising.
The WI may be rooted in history but is as relevant today as it was then. The activities, discussions and diverse opportunities are enjoyed by modern women of all ages. Some of our women have been members for 20 or 30 years or longer, whilst others joined in 2012.  Not just Jam and Jerusalem  - have you seen 'Calendar Girls'? but...
